Die Deutsch-Skandinavische Jugend-Philharmonie ist ein internationales und sinfonisch besetztes Jugendorchester, welches seine Arbeitsphasen in Form von Orchesterkursen durchführt. Die regelmäßige Veranstaltung „Deutsch-Skandinavischer Orchesterwoche“ geht auf die Initiative des Dirigenten und Komponisten Andreas Peer Kähler zurück, der seit der ersten Arbeitsphase über den Jahreswechsel 1981/82 ständiger Dirigent und künstlerischer Leiter des Orchesters ist.

Bei diesen Orchesterkursen bietet die Deutsch-Skandinavische Jugend-Philharmonie den teilnehmenden jungen Musikern die Möglichkeit, mit Hilfe eines erfahrenen Dozententeams ein anspruchsvolles Konzertprogramm zu erarbeiten und so Orchester- und Konzertpraxis zu sammeln. Der Teilnehmerkreis der Orchesterwochen umfasst etwa einhundert junge MusikerInnen; in der Mehrzahl Studierende europäischer Musikhochschulen und –konservatorien. Vertreten sind aber auch junge BerufsmusikerInnen und SchülerInnen mit dem Berufsziel Orchestermusiker. Für seine Konzertprogramme greift die Deutsch-Skandinavische Jugend-Philharmonie ausgewählte Themen des nordischen Kulturraums auf und bemüht sich darum, zur besseren Kenntnis nordischer Orchestermusik in Deutschland beizutragen. Zahlreiche Uraufführungen und deutsche Erstaufführungen, u.a. von Werken von Allan Petterson, Jón Leifs und Edvard Grieg, bezeugen die Wichtigkeit der Aufgabe, die das Orchester damit übernommen hat. Höhepunkte der vergangenen Jahre waren darüber hinaus Gastkonzerte in Järna (Schweden), sowie in Lahti und Helsinki (Finnland).

Das neue Projekt "The Young North" wird möglich gemacht durch den Nordischen Kulturfond.

The regular event of the "German-Scandinavian Philharmonic Weeks" (Deutsch-Skandinavische Orchesterwochen) hearken back to the initiative of the conductor and composer Andreas Peer Kähler , who has permanently been the orchestra's conductor and art director since the first work phase in the end of 1981 – beginning of 1982.

During these orchestra courses, the German-Scandinavian Youth Philharmonic offers to the participating young musicians the possibility to work on a demanding concert programme with the support of an experienced team of tutors and, thus, to gain practical orchestra and concert experiences. The group of participants in the Philharmonic Weeks consists of about one hundred young musicians, mainly students from conservatoires by now from over 20 different countries, but there are also young professionals and school students with the professional goal of orchestra musician participating.

In its concert programmes, the German-Scandinavian Youth Philharmonic addresses selected subjects from the Nordic cultural area and tries to contribute to an improved knowledge of Nordic orchestra music in Germany. The concerts with explanations and background information by the conductor providing portraits of the composers, their works and topical references are of high significance in this context. In recent years the German-Scandinavian Youth Philharmonic regularly commissioned compositions covering the subjects of the respective philharmonic week. Traditionally, the final concert terminating each work phase takes place at the Berliner Philharmonie.

The German-Scandinavian Youth Philharmonic is a corporate member of Jeunesses Musicales Germany and has been recognised as a registered non-profit association since 1988. Patrons of its Orchestra Weeks are the Governing Mayor of Berlin and the Embassadors of the Nordic Countries in Germany – taking annual turns according to the respective focus of the programme.
