Georg-Büchner High School, which was founded in 1976, is located in the south of Berlin.It was named after Georg Büchner (1813-1837), a German author who was politically persecuted because of his commitment to social justice and the fight against poverty and oppression. His ideas are reflected in our school’s endeavor to achieve a fair and harmonious sense of community among students, teachers and parents.

Georg-Büchner High School is a secondary school which is called “Gymnasium” in the German school system, a school type for pupils who have had good results in their elementary schools and are motivated to head for academic training.

The area that the school is located in has the character of a quiet suburb. The city center is easily reachable by public transport. Our school is attended by approximately 600 students (age 12 to 18) who are taught and supervised by more than 60 teachers.

The school offers a wide range of academic subjects such as History, Politics, Math, Biology, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, as well as languages like German, English, French and Latin (students are obliged to study two foreign languages) . Additionally, Arts, Music and Drama are taught, too..

After six years, at the age of 17/18, the students pass their school-leaving exam called “Abitur” which enables them to study at colleges and universities.

Since the English language becomes more and more important in our globalized world, our school has got a bilingual profil which means that we have bilingual lessons in our German-English classes.

In grades 7 and 8 the students in these classes have two extra English lessons per week. From grade 8 to 10, Geography is being taught in English, as well as History/Politics from grade 9 to their final examination in 12th grade. .

Our school atmosphere is very important to us. Therefore, every year we grant the “Georg-Büchner School Award” to pupils who have dedicated themselves to the school community. We are trying to encourage a sense of community among the students, the staff and the parents in our everyday school life. As a result we endeavor to solve conflicts in cooperation with pupils and teachers, we encourage and support our students in order to achieve a motivating learning environment.

As a special offer, the school provides voluntary Chinese classes in the afternoon to enable students to learn more about the Asian culture, tradition and language. Since their beginning, the classes have experienced a growing number of students every year.

Furthermore we have an emphasis on music and arts. Thereby it is also our aim to enable pupils to acquire a certain media competence which includes the handling of the new media.

The school has a tradition of different activities, which reflect our school profile. On the one hand, the school offers exchange programs with Great Britain and Australia. On the other hand different competitions in the area of art, sports and theater are organized.

Students have the opportunity to buy snacks and drinks at the school cafeteria.
